Review: 2022 Three Sticks Castenada Rose

Don’t let the squat bottle fool you. This is a still, rose wine, made by the Three Sticks Winery and given a special name and bottling to honor the Vallejo-Casteñada Adobe, one of the few remaining Mexican-era residences still standing in downtown Sonoma and a building which now serves as Three Sticks’ tasting room.

A bright pink rose of made from various Rhone varietals, this is one of the more berry-forward rose wines I’ve encountered in recent memory. This is a slightly sweet exploration of strawberries both fresh and candied, gently weaving its way toward elements of orange blossoms, honeysuckle, and and late-game coconut. The candylike quality builds as the wine approaches the finish, and while the sweetness is never cloying, it lacks much in the way of acidity to make it a cleansing, food-friendly offering. Recommended for use as an aperitif or in a spritz.
